UBCD3600XLT Scanning: Quick Keys, Startup Keys & Scan Order

Summary: How the UBCD3600XLT decides what to scan and in what order, and how to use Quick Keys, Startup Keys and priority to control it.

Scanning Is Controlled by Quick Keys

With older scanners you chose banks to scan. Here you choose Favorites Lists, Systems and Departments by assigning Quick Keys to them. Scanning is a mixture of list (FLQK), system (SQK) and department (DQK) order. The scanner does not scan every system in one list and then move to the next list.

The Scan Order

  1. For each Favorites List starting from list quick key 0, the scanner scans each system with system quick key 0 in list order, and then moves on to the next set of system quick keys. For example: FLQK 0 / SQK 0; FLQK 1 / SQK 0; … FLQK 98 / SQK 99; FLQK 99 / SQK 99.
  2. Systems sharing a quick key are scanned in the order they were created.
  3. The database is scanned next, in order of creation.
  4. Then systems with no quick key (including any Quick Save system), in order of creation.
  5. Departments inside systems follow the same rules as systems; conventional channels inside are scanned in order of creation.
  6. Trunked IDs aren’t really “scanned”. The scanner listens for any activity on the trunking system, and shows all IDs when ID Search is on or only programmed IDs when it’s off.
  7. Then any Custom Searches enabled for Search with Scan, in order.
  8. Then the Close Call Hits with Scan system, if it isn’t avoided (it’s permanently avoided by default) and has frequencies in it.

The scanner stays in a system for the System Hold Time. For trunked systems it moves on when the hold time has expired, the current transmission has ended and the channel delay has expired. Conventional systems work the same way, but every unavoided channel is scanned at least once regardless.

Scanning Checklist

If you get Nothing to Scan:

  1. Enable at least one Favorites List or the Full Database in Select Lists to Monitor.
  2. Any list, system or department that has a quick key must be enabled, either with the keypad or via Manage Quick Key Status.
  3. The service types used by the channels must be switched on.

A Favorites List with no quick key that isn’t avoided and is set to On in Select Lists to Monitor is scanned. Departments and systems with no quick key that aren’t avoided are scanned.

Selecting Quick Keys From the Keypad

  • Favorites List: press the number key(s) assigned to the list, then E/yes. Example: 00 then E/yes to enable or disable list 0.
  • System in the current list: press ./no, then the two-digit system quick key. Example: ./no, 03, E/yes.
  • Department in the current list: press ./no twice, then the two-digit department quick key. Example: ./no ./no, 07, E/yes.
  • System in a different list: the list’s number, then ./no, then the system’s two digits, then E/yes. Example: 00, ./no, 04, E/yes for list 0, system 4.

Startup Keys

Assign each Favorites List a Startup Key (0-9). Then, to power up with only certain lists on:

  1. Turn the scanner off.
  2. Press and hold the number key for the startup key when you turn the scanner on.
  3. Keep holding until the display shows the startup key configuration number.

The scanner then turns monitoring on for lists whose Startup Key matches, and off for lists whose Startup Key doesn’t. Systems aren’t affected. Caution: if you press a key with no lists assigned to it, you’ll start up with everything off and see Nothing to Scan.

Priority Scanning

  • Priority Scan interrupts scanning of a conventional system, according to the Priority Interval and Max Channels settings, to check priority channels. The more priority channels, the longer the interruption. The lists and systems holding them must be enabled and not avoided, or you’ll see Priority Scan No Channel.
  • Priority DND checks priority channels only when the scanner isn’t receiving another conventional channel, so it never interrupts.
  • Priority ID Scan is similar for trunked talkgroups but doesn’t interrupt a transmission: priority is checked between transmissions, while the scanner is on the control channel and during the channel delay. It can only look at the trunked system currently being scanned. Turn it on for each system and set the IDs as priority.

Priority order: channels in system and department quick key 0 are the highest priority and 99 the lowest. Within one department, priority follows the order the channels were created.

Toggle Priority modes with Func + ./no (PRI), or use Menu, Priority Scan:

  • Set Priority – Off, Priority DND (PRI shown reversed) or Priority Scan (PRI shown).
  • Set Interval – 1 to 10 seconds.
  • MaxChannels/Pri-Scan – 1 to 100; with 100 priority channels and a maximum of 20, a full priority check takes five intervals.
