TRX-1 Objects, Scanlists & the Library

Summary: How the TRX-1 organises what it scans: objects, scanlists, scan sets, and the RadioReference library structure.

Scannable Objects

A scannable object is any defined item that can be scanned or monitored: a conventional (non-trunked) radio frequency, a talkgroup on a trunked system, a radio service, or a defined search. Because every object is defined by the same basic elements, once you know how to program one kind you can program the others. The object types you’ll meet are:

  • CONV – a conventional frequency.
  • TSYS – a trunked system: its type, its control-channel or voice frequencies, and its sites.
  • TGRP – a talkgroup on a trunked system. A trunked system can’t itself be scanned; you scan the talkgroup objects that belong to it.

Scanlists

Objects are grouped into scanlists. There are 200 scanlists, and you can rename them, switch them on or off, and use them to separate, for example, one town’s police from another town’s fire service.

  • Objects imported with Set Location go into scanlists 151 and higher, one scanlist per service type, already named (for example Multi Dispatch, Law Tac, Interop, Fire Talk).
  • Objects you import yourself go into the scanlist you choose. Scanlist 001 is ticked by default, so untick it if you want the objects somewhere else.
  • Scanlists are ticked in the Scanlists item on the Main Menu to include them in scanning.

Scan Sets

There are 20 scan sets that work with scanlists, so you can switch a whole group of scanlists on or off at once. Each scan set holds all 200 normal scanlists plus the special SKYWARN scanlist. The scanner starts with Scan Set 01 on and every scanlist allowed, so the individual scanlist ticks decide what is scanned. If the scanner says Nothing to Scan! although you have objects stored, check that you haven’t unticked Scan Set 01.

A worked idea from the guide: put City 1 in scanlists 01-30, City 2 in 31-50 and City 3 in 51-62. Rename Scan Set 01 to the City 1 name and untick boxes 31 and up (leave SKYWARN ticked), make Scan Set 02 allow 31-50, and Scan Set 03 allow 51-62. Moving between cities is then a matter of unticking one scan set and ticking another. The Scan Sets Opt setting turns the scan set feature on (see TRX-1 V-Scanner Storage & Global Settings).

The Library

The RadioReference library on the SD card is organised by country, state/province and county. Each state has three data types: Agencies (statewide conventional frequencies), Counties/Cities, and Systems (statewide trunked systems with their control frequencies (sites) and talkgroups). Each county has Agencies (local conventional frequencies), Categories (public service conventional frequencies) and Systems (public service trunked systems, sites and talkgroups). Not every state has a statewide trunked system.

In library lists a D marks an item that uses an unsupported digital modulation and can’t be monitored, an S marks a trunked system the scanner doesn’t support, and a grey tick box means only some of a grouping’s entries are selected.
