IC-R30 Overview, Features & Accessories

Summary: A tour of the Icom IC-R30 wideband handheld communications receiver: what it covers, what it can decode, what’s in the box and how this section is organised.

What the IC-R30 Is

The IC-R30 is a compact, dust-proof and waterproof wideband receiver covering 0.100 MHz to 3304.99999 MHz. It has two independent receivers (A band and B band) for Dualwatch, can decode several digital voice modes, has a built-in GPS receiver, a microSD card slot, a Bluetooth unit and a Micro-B USB connector. It has a built-in bar antenna for the AM broadcast band.

This section combines Icom’s Basic Manual and Advanced Manual for the IC-R30 into one set of articles. Where they overlap, the article follows the fuller Advanced Manual text.

Main Features

  • Dualwatch – two receivers watching different frequencies or modes at once, and recording both. DV/DV, AM/AM, FM-N/FM-N and DV/FM-N Dualwatch combinations aren’t available.
  • Wide coverage: the A band covers 0.100-3304.99999 MHz (the USA-01 version leaves out some cellular-related ranges); the B band covers 108-520 MHz.
  • Analogue modes: FM, FM-N, WFM, AM, AM-N, LSB, USB, CW and CW-R (SSB and CW on the A band at 1300 MHz and below).
  • Digital modes: D-STAR (DV), APCO P25 (Phase 1), dPMR, NXDN (NXDN-VN and NXDN-N) and DCR (Digital Convenience Radio).
  • Band Scope – a visual sweep around the displayed frequency.
  • 2,000 memory channels in 100 groups, plus 50 pairs of program scan edges, 200 Auto Memory Write channels and 100 skip channels; 300 GPS memories.
  • Scans: VFO scans (all, band, program, program link, Auto MW), memory scans (all, mode, near station, group link, group), tone scan, Priority Watch and temporary skip.
  • Speech function that announces the frequency and mode.
  • GPS: position display, GPS memory and alarm, and a GPS Logger to the microSD card.
  • Voice recorder with a built-in player, and a receive history log for digital calls.
  • Bluetooth for the Icom VS-3 headset and for the RS-R30I (iOS) and RS-R30A (Android) remote control apps.
  • IP57 dust and water protection (with the battery, antenna, jack cap and slot cover attached).
  • Noise blanker, noise limiter, AFC, Voice Squelch Control, RF gain, attenuator, home channels, and optional CS-R30 cloning software.

Supplied Accessories

Antenna, hand strap, belt clip, battery pack, rapid charger and power adapter, and a USB cable (A to Micro-B). Some accessories aren’t supplied, or look different, depending on the version. See IC-R30 Specifications & Options.

Versions

The manuals cover USA-01, USA-02 and EUR-01 versions. UK receivers are normally the European (EUR-01) version. Functions marked “USA version only” (the Weather Channel and Weather Alert) aren’t on European receivers. The default display units (feet and miles, mph, degrees F, inches of mercury) are US ones; change them under Display, Display Unit (see IC-R30 SET Menu Reference).

Squawker

Squawker PC’s Connect panel supports the IC-R30, but its Scanner Programmer and Squawker Online exports don’t have an IC-R30 format. See IC-R30 Loading Frequencies From Squawker PC & Squawker Online.
