IC-R15 Recording & Playback

Summary: How to record received audio to the IC-R15’s microSD card, play it back, manage the files and copy them to a PC.

Before You Start

A microSD card must be in the receiver (see IC-R15 Getting Started: Accessories, microSD Card & First Steps). Once a recording starts it stays on, even if you turn the receiver off and on again, until you stop it.

Recording

  • Start / stop: hold [REC] for 1 second (“Recording started.” / “Recording stopped.”). You can also use QUICK, <<Start REC>>, or MENU, RECORD, <<REC Start>>.
  • With Dualwatch on, both the MAIN and SUB bands are recorded (see REC Operation below); with a single band display, the displayed band is recorded.
  • By default recording pauses while the squelch is closed and resumes when a signal arrives.
  • The recording continues until you stop it or the card is full.

Recorder Settings (MENU, RECORD, Recorder Set)

  • RX REC Condition (default Squelch Auto): Always records everything (files then contain silence when nothing’s received), Squelch Auto records only when the squelch is open (and continues for 2 seconds after it closes).
  • File Split (default ON): a new file is started whenever reception or squelch status changes (Squelch Auto only). OFF keeps one file, starting a new one automatically if it passes 4 GB.
  • REC Operation (default A/B Link): A/B Link starts and stops both bands together; A/B Separate works on the selected MAIN band only.
  • Skip Time (Player Set, default 10 s): 3, 5, 10 or 30 seconds for fast forward and rewind.

Files

Audio is saved as WAV files in dated folders YYYYMMDD, named for example 20240312_093000A (“A” is the A band; “B” for B). Recordings include the frequency, mode and date, which can be seen on the receiver (not on a PC).

Playing Back

  1. MENU, RECORD, Play Files. Choose the folder, then the file.
  2. The VOICE PLAYER starts: [ENT] pauses and resumes, D-pad right/left fast forward and rewind (hold to continue), D-pad up/down go to the previous or next file, and rotating [DIAL] moves by 1/20 of the file. [CLEAR] stops.
  3. In the file list push [QUICK] and choose Display File to show ALL, A only or B only.

Managing Files

In the folder or file list (don’t push ENT), push [QUICK] and choose Delete (folder or file), Delete All Folders / Delete All, File Information or Folder Information. Deleted audio can’t be recovered. With the display set to A only or B only, only the displayed files are deleted.

Playing on a PC

Set SET, Function, USB Connect to SD Card Mode, connect the USB cable, open the IC-R15 > Voice folders on the card, and open a file. See IC-R15 microSD Card: Backup, CSV Import/Export & SD Card Mode. Free recording time: MENU, SET, SD Card, SD Card Info.
