IC-R20 Keys, Dials & Display

Summary: What each key, dial and jack on the IC-R20 does, and what every indicator on the display means.

Front, Top and Side

• Antenna connector (BNC) for the supplied antenna. Never carry the receiver by the antenna.
• [SQL] – push and hold to monitor (open the squelch); while pushing rotate [R-DIAL] to set the squelch level.
• [UP]/[DOWN] keys – the audio volume.
• [USB] jack – for the optional OPC-1382 cloning cable.
• [DC] jack – the AC adaptor or cigarette lighter cable.
• [SP/CI-V] jack – an optional earphone or headphones (the internal speaker stops when anything is connected) or the optional CT-17 for remote control.
• [L-DIAL] – volume (single band) or the tuning dial for the upper side in Dualwatch. [R-DIAL] – the frequency; changes scan direction; sets the squelch while [SQL] is pushed; selects options.

Keypad

Each numeric key also has a function when held for 1 second.

• [DUALWATCH] – hold for 1 second to toggle single band and Dualwatch; clears numeric input; backs out of a setting; cancels scope or scan.
• [MAIN/SUB] – selects the MAIN band in Dualwatch; hold to exchange the upper and lower frequencies.
• [POWER] – hold 1 second for on or off.
• [BAND] – selects the band; with [R-DIAL] also selects the band. Also selects the memory bank.
• [VFO MHz] – VFO mode; hold to toggle 1 MHz and 10 MHz tuning.
• [MODE SCAN] – push for the receive mode (FM, WFM, AM, USB, LSB, CW); hold to start a scan.
• [MR S.MW] – push to cycle Memory mode, PreSet, TV and Weather channels; hold 1 second for memory write; hold 2 seconds to copy the memory to the VFO.
• [1 DIAL.SEL] – hold to swap the volume and tuning functions of the dials.
• [2 SWEEP], [3 CENTER], [SCOPE] – the band scope.
• [4 T-SCAN] – hold for a tone scan. [5 SKIP] – skip settings. [6 M.N] – hold to show or hide memory names.
• [0 AFC] – hold to toggle AFC. [7 TONE] – hold (or rotate [R-DIAL]) to choose TSQL, TSQLS, DTCS, DTCSS or VSC. [8 SET] – hold to enter Set mode. [9 TS] – hold for the tuning step.
• [. LOCK] – hold to lock the keys.
• Recorder keys: [REWIND/ATT] (hold 1 second for the attenuator), [FAST FORWARD/RF GAIN] (hold for RF gain), [STOP/PLAY] and [REC].

Function Display

• Battery indicator; duplex (+DUP / -DUP); signal squelch indicators (TSQL, DTCS, S for pocket beep, VSC)
• ANL (AM) or NB (LSB/USB/CW); lock; AFC (single band only); SKIP / PSKIP
• Channel section: memory channel (with the memory symbol and three digits), auto-memory write channel, TV, PreSet or WX (USA version only)
• Signal strength, priority watch, attenuator, volume/dial exchange icon
• Memory or bank name, frequency readout (the decimal point blinks while scanning), receive mode, main band indicator (Dualwatch)
