TRX-1 Keypad, Controls & Turning On

Summary: What each key on the TRX-1 does, how to turn it on and set the squelch, and the quick Fn shortcuts.

The Keys

  • POWER – press and hold for one second to turn on and off. A brief press confirms the backlight level (it toggles the backlight).
  • MENU – opens options for what you’re currently doing, and the Main Menu.
  • WX – instant access to NOAA weather radio and SAME weather alert mode. Press twice to select the SKYWARN scanlist (needs one-time programming).
  • ATT – cycles the attenuator between Per Object, Global and Global Attenuation On.
  • PRI – toggles priority for the selected or active object. Fn + PRI switches Priority Mode on or off while scanning.
  • SKIP – while monitoring or paused on an object, temporarily disables it; pressing SKIP again while it’s selected restores it. It can be programmed to lock out permanently instead (Global Settings). While editing text, SKIP clears all text at and to the right of the cursor. In Playback it stops the current recording (or moves to the next one when playing several). In Weather mode it toggles Normal and SAME Standby. In many menus it cancels or aborts a pending change.
  • Fn – activates alternate key functions.
  • Play/Pause/SEL – controls Scan, Pause and Playback, and selects, enables or disables options in menus.
  • Four-way push pad – navigates objects and menus; while scanning, up and down raise and lower the volume.
  • Alphanumeric keypad – enters frequencies, talkgroup IDs and names. While scanning, pressing 1 to 200 toggles that scanlist on or off.

Toggling Scanlists While Scanning

Each key press must be within 2 seconds of the last. To toggle several scanlists, press the decimal point once as a separator and twice to end the sequence. To toggle scanlist 9 press 9. To toggle 9, 11 and 22 press 9 . 11 . 22 (or add one or two closing points).

Turning On and Setting the Squelch

  1. Preset the squelch knob between the 10 and 12 o’clock position.
  2. While scanning, turn the knob down (counter-clockwise) until you hear noise, then up a little past where the noise stops.

The higher the squelch is set, the stronger a signal must be to break it. If the scanner is on but doesn’t scan, the squelch may not be set correctly: turn it clockwise.

Quick Function Access Keys

  • Fn + Up arrow – top of the menu list. Fn + Down arrow – bottom of the list.
  • Fn + Power – keyboard lock.
  • Fn + 0 – Tune mode. Fn + 1 – Scan mode. Fn + 2 – Program Menu.
  • Fn + 3 – Sweeper menu. Fn + 4 – Service Search menu. Fn + 5 – Limit Search.
  • Fn + 6 – Playback mode. Fn + 9 – Object search.

Power-Up Password

To restrict use of the radio, press MENU, scroll to Set Password, press right, set the password with the arrows and press SEL to accept (MENU exits without saving). The guide warns that anyone using the EZ Scan software can reset the password, so it gives only limited protection.
