IC-R20 Memory Channels & Banks

Summary: How the IC-R20 stores its memory channels in banks, and how to programme, name, copy, clear and organise them.

How Memory Is Organised

  • 1,000 regular channels (000-999), which can be assigned to 26 banks (A-Z) with up to 100 channels in each bank.
  • 200 auto-memory write channels (a group filled by the auto-memory write scan).
  • 50 scan edge channels (25 pairs, 00A/00B to 24A/24B).

A memory channel stores: frequency, receive mode, duplex direction and offset, tone squelch or DTCS on/off with the tone frequency or code and polarity, and skip information. Memory names (8 characters) and bank names are separate.

Programming a Channel

  1. Push [VFO MHz] and set the frequency, mode, offset, duplex, tone and so on.
  2. Hold [MR S.MW] for 1 second (one short and one long beep; the memory symbol blinks).
  3. Rotate [R-DIAL] to choose the channel (scan edge channels 00A/B-24A/B can also be chosen).
  4. Hold [MR S.MW] for 1 second (three beeps). Continuing to hold moves to the next channel number.

Assigning to a Bank

In the memory write condition choose the channel, hold [8 SET] and rotate [R-DIAL] to BANK (or push [8 SET] repeatedly), hold [BAND] and rotate to choose the bank letter (A-Z), release and rotate to choose the bank channel (00-99; vacant ones are shown), then hold [MR S.MW] for 1 second.

To use a bank in Memory mode hold [BAND] and rotate [R-DIAL] (only programmed banks show), then rotate for the channel. To return to regular memory, keep rotating past the banks.

Names

Up to 8 characters for a memory or bank name. In the memory write condition choose MNAME (memory) or BNAME (bank) with [8 SET] and rotate [R-DIAL] to choose characters (hold [6 M.N] while rotating for the character group), and hold [BAND] and rotate to move the cursor. Hold [MR S.MW] for 1 second to store it. Only one bank name per bank: it’s shared by all channels in the bank. Characters: A-Z, a-z, 0-9, space and symbols.

To show names, hold [6 M.N] and rotate [R-DIAL] in Memory mode to choose the memory name, the bank name or none (shown under the frequency).

Copying

  • Memory to VFO: select the channel, hold [MR S.MW] for 1 second, push [VFO MHz] (or rotate to VFO) and hold [MR S.MW] again. Holding [MR S.MW] for 2 seconds copies it to the VFO immediately.
  • Memory to memory: select the channel, hold [MR S.MW] for 1 second (not longer, or it copies to the VFO), rotate to the target and hold [MR S.MW] again.

Clearing

In the memory write condition choose the channel, select CLEAR with [8 SET], and hold [MR S.MW] for 1 second. The channel becomes blank. Cleared contents cannot be recalled, even through a bank.

Clearing or Moving Bank Contents

Select the bank channel, hold [MR S.MW] for 1 second, choose BANK and either another bank/channel (to move) or “—-” (to remove it from the bank), then hold [MR S.MW]. Clearing bank contents doesn’t erase the channel itself.

Bank Link

Set mode, BANK LINK chooses which banks are included in the bank-link scan (all on by default).

PreSet and TV Channels

PreSet channels (most-used frequencies) and TV channels are programmed only with the optional CS-R20.
