Frequency & Channel Mode – Saving and Naming Channels

Summary: Working in VFO and memory modes, saving a setup as a channel, and naming channels from the keypad.

Frequency (VFO) Mode

In frequency mode you type the frequency on the keypad. The first group of menu items (up to the mode and TXLock entries) are the live settings for that VFO: step, power, receive and transmit tones, offset direction and size, bandwidth, busy channel lockout, compander and mode.

Once a VFO is set up the way you want, save it with ChSave and choose the memory channel to store it in.

Channel (Memory) Mode

Channel mode lets you step through saved channels. You can add channels by hand as above, or load them from your PC with Squawker PC’s Quansheng programmer.

If you change a per-channel setting such as step or power and want it to stay, save the channel again with ChSave. Otherwise the change only applies to the temporary copy and can disappear when you switch channel or restart the radio.

Deleting and Copying

  • ChDele deletes a memory channel.
  • In channel mode, F then 1 BAND copies the channel’s settings into the frequency mode VFO.
  • F then 4 FC starts frequency copy, described in the Scanning article.

Naming a Channel

Use ChName, choose the channel, and press M to edit its name. The number keys work like an old mobile phone:

  • Press the same key repeatedly to cycle through its letters and number (2 gives a, b, c, 2).
  • Long-press a number key to enter that number directly.
  • Short-press F to switch between lower and upper case. Long-press F for #.
  • Short-press \* SCAN for a hyphen, or long-press it for an asterisk.
  • Press 0 for a space.
  • UP and DOWN also cycle through characters, and M moves to the next position.
  • EXIT goes back one character; long-press EXIT cancels the edit.

When “Sure?” appears, press M to save or EXIT to cancel.
