BCD536HP Wi-Fi Setup

Summary: How to connect the BCD536HP’s Wi-Fi dongle so you can control the scanner remotely from a tablet or computer.

What It’s For

The included Wi-Fi dongle lets you connect wirelessly to the BCD536HP and control it with Uniden’s remote software (an app for an iPad, Android tablet or computer). This applies to the BCD536HP only.

Before You Start

  • Plug the dongle into the USB port on the back of the scanner.
  • Keep the dongle’s antenna at least 7.8 inches (20 cm) from all persons, and don’t operate it together with any other antenna or transmitter (an FCC RF exposure requirement in the manual).
  • With the dongle not connected the scanner shows Wi-Fi not connected.

The Two Connection Modes

  • Infrastructure mode – connects the scanner to an existing access point such as a router. Usually you only need to set a password (occasionally none is needed).
  • Access Point mode – the scanner becomes the access point, for laptops and smart devices. It can connect with up to 5 clients. You set an SSID, a security type and a password.

The Wi-Fi Menu

Press Menu, scroll to Wi-Fi Setup and press E/yes. (You can also press Func + 5 to reach the Wi-Fi menu.)

  • Show Wi-Fi Information – the IP address, MAC address and version when connected.
  • Set Connection:
  • Off – not connected.
  • Infrastructure Mode – choose Select AP (the access point, shown with its encryption type), then Input Password.
  • Access Point Mode – Input SSID (enter a name or use the default), Select Security (Open or WPA/WPA2), and Input Password.
  • Reset to Factory – reinitialises the Wi-Fi settings.

Display Icons

The Wi-Fi status shows on the display: one icon for not connected, one for connected, and AP when connected in Access Point mode.

Notes

  • Wi-Fi remote control is separate from Squawker PC’s Scanner Programmer, which works over the USB cable. See BCD436HP/536HP Loading Frequencies From Squawker PC & Squawker Online.
  • Use a strong WPA/WPA2 password for Access Point mode so others can’t control your scanner.
