Connecting for Programming

Before You Can Program

Your radio’s profile needs Enable Programming ticked in Connect Settings (see Creating a Connection Profile) — only profiles with this enabled appear as options in the Programmer.

How the Connection Works

The Programmer makes its own connection to the radio when you start programming — it doesn’t need Squawker Connect’s live session to already be running. It opens the COM port saved in your profile, tries a few common connection speeds until it gets a response, and confirms the scanner is responding before continuing.

If It Can’t Connect

You’ll see a message telling you what to check — typically some combination of: the scanner is powered on, the USB cable is properly connected, the correct COM port is selected in the profile, and no other application (including Squawker Connect itself, if it’s got that port open) is using the port.

Make Sure You’ve Selected the Right Profile

For the BCD436HP/BCD536HP/UBCD3600XLT/SDS100/SDS200 family, Squawker PC checks the radio’s actual reported model against your profile before writing anything, and warns you if they don’t match.

For every other supported radio (UBC125XLT/C, BCD160DN/BCD260DN, BCT15X, UBC3500XLT, UBC800XLT, and Whistler), there’s currently no such check — Squawker PC sends commands formatted for whatever model your profile says it is, with nothing to catch a mismatch. If you have multiple scanners or profiles on one of these models, double-check you’ve picked the profile matching the exact radio connected to that port before programming.
