IC-R30 Troubleshooting

Summary: Fixes for common IC-R30 problems.

  • The receiver doesn’t turn on – the battery is exhausted (charge it or replace the batteries); a bad connection (clean the terminals); reversed polarity in the battery case.
  • No sound from the speaker – volume too low (push the volume up key); Earphone Mode is ON (turn it off); squelch too tight (set it to the threshold); a tone squelch or digital squelch (D.SQL) is on (turn it off); an external speaker is in the jack (remove it); a Bluetooth headset is connected (disconnect it).
  • Sensitivity is too low and only strong signals are heard – the attenuator is on (turn it off); RF gain is reduced (set RFG MAX); the coaxial cable of an external antenna is disconnected or shorted.
  • Low sensitivity on the AM broadcast (BC) band – the internal antenna isn’t selected: set Function, Bar Antenna to Use.
  • SSB audio is unclear or distorted – the wrong sideband: toggle between USB and LSB.
  • [DIAL] and the volume keys have swapped – push [DIAL SEL].
  • The frequency can’t be set – Key Lock is on (turn it off); you’re in Memory mode (push [VFO]).
  • The displayed frequency is wrong – a CPU fault (reset the receiver), or an external cause (remove and refit the battery pack or case).
  • A Program Scan doesn’t start – you’re in Memory mode; or the same frequency is in FREQ HIGH and FREQ LOW.
  • A Memory Scan doesn’t start – you’re not in Memory mode; or fewer than two memory channels are stored.
  • The Speech function doesn’t work – the SPEECH Level is 0; raise it.
  • Can’t charge – the receiver must be off; a USB hub, low-output port or a third-party cable may not work.
  • Interference in the 2.4 GHz band – a Bluetooth device nearby; move away or turn Bluetooth off.
  • Odd behaviour after a firmware change – see IC-R30 Firmware Updates, Reset & Maintenance for the Partial and All Reset steps.
