IC-R30 Menu System, Quick Menu & Entering Text

Summary: How to use the IC-R30’s MENU screen and Quick Menu, and how to enter text.

The MENU Screen

Push [MENU] to open it. It is a tree of settings: RX History, Digital Set, SPEECH, Function, Near Station, Scan, Manage Memory, RX Recorder, GPS, Display, Sounds, Time Set, Bluetooth Set, SD Card and Others (some items may vary by version). Use [DIAL] or the D-pad to choose, [ENTER] to set, D-pad left or [CLEAR] to go back a level, and [CLEAR] to return to the main screen. [QUICK] on a setting offers Default to restore its default.

The manuals describe this as “Select”: for example “[MENU] > Function > Auto Power OFF” means push MENU, choose Function, choose Auto Power OFF, then the option. See IC-R30 SET Menu Reference.

The Quick Menu

Push [QUICK] to open a short list of things you change often. It depends on the mode:

  • VFO mode: Band Select, MODE, DUP, TONE (FM/FM-N), VSC, D.SQL (digital modes), SCRAM (dPMR), ENCR (NXDN and DCR), TS, ATT, RF Gain, NB (SSB/CW), ANL (AM), AFC (FM/FM-N/WFM), GPS Information, GPS Position, PRIO Watch, Home CH Set, Display Type, Battery Level, Band Scope, <<REC Start>> and <<GPS Logger Only>>.
  • Memory mode: Group Select, SKIP and the same functions.
  • USA versions also show Weather CH.

Entering Text

Names use these character types: AB (A-Z, 0-9, space), ab (a-z, 0-9, space), 12 (digits and space) and !”# (symbols). File names for Save Setting and Export can’t contain / : ; * < >.

  1. Rotate [DIAL] (or push D-pad up or down) to choose a character, or use the keypad.
  2. Move the cursor with the D-pad left and right. [QUICK] switches upper and lower case (and opens the entry mode window).
  3. [CLEAR] deletes a character (hold to delete continuously). [ENTER] sets the entry.

Example: to name memory channel 00 in group 00: [VFO/MR] for Memory mode, [MW], Manage Memory, choose the group, push [QUICK], Edit, choose NAME, enter it, [ENTER], <<Overwrite>>, YES.

Names for memory channels and groups are up to 16 characters (the Advanced Manual’s list doesn’t give the limit for every item). The Bluetooth device name uses AB, ab and 12 only.
