TRX-1 DMR & NXDN Systems With EZ Scan PC

Summary: Importing or manually creating DMR and NXDN systems with the EZ Scan PC application, and the way the TRX-1 scans them.

How DMR and NXDN Differ

For DMR and NXDN the scanner doesn’t use a control channel. Instead it tries to scan all sites and all frequencies for each site to look for activity. So it’s recommended that you import and/or enable only the sites you expect to be in range.

DMR systems are shown in the library list by the types Connect Plus, Capacity Plus, Linked Cap Plus and Hytera XPT. NXDN systems are shown as NEXTEDGE 4800, NEXTEDGE 9600, Icom IDAS (C) and Icom IDAS (D). The scanner is described as DMR/MotoTRBO Tier II capable.

Importing a System

These steps assume Set Location is switched off in the PC application’s General Settings tab and/or you use the Preferred import type.

  1. Click the Library Import tab.
  2. Select your state or province, double-click Counties/Cities, click your county, then double-click Systems in the Data Type box.
  3. Tick the system. For systems with several transmitter sites click Sites and select the ones to import.
  4. Optionally use the Talkgroups button to load only chosen talkgroups.
  5. Click Import Selected Channels and tick the scanlist in the SEL column. Import Options lets you add a wildcard to search for new talkgroups and another for radio-to-radio private calls.
  6. Click Import Channels. You can then import more systems.

By default you will only hear talkgroups already submitted to RadioReference.

Adding Wildcards and Locking Out Sites Later

  1. Open the Trunked Radio Systems tab and click the system’s Alpha Tag so the Trunked System Site Information panel appears.
  2. On Site Details, tick L/O for sites you don’t want. (The Multi-Site Settings options have no effect on DMR systems.)
  3. On Talkgroup Details click Add Wildcard if there isn’t one, and choose its scanlist. On Radio ID Details click Add Wildcard for a Radio ID wildcard.

Creating a System by Hand

Use this if you learn of a new system or the library lists no talkgroups.

  1. On the Trunked Radio Systems tab click New, then set the Alpha Tag, the Type (DMR or NXDN) and the Country, and set AGC to On.
  2. On Site Details select the “Site 001” alpha tag and enter the site frequencies on the Site Frequencies tab. For best performance enter all the site’s frequencies (control, alternate and others), and no duplicates.
  3. Add wildcards as above.

Write your configuration to the scanner’s SD card afterwards using the Scanner/SD Card menu in EZ Scan.
