IC-R20 Band Scope

Summary: How to use the IC-R20’s band scope to see signals in a range around a frequency.

What It Does

The band scope visually checks a frequency range around the displayed frequency. The sweep range can be +/-14 kHz to +/-1400 kHz depending on the step.

Using It

  1. Set the centre frequency in VFO mode.
  2. To change the sweep step, hold [2 SWEEP] and rotate [R-DIAL]. Steps: 1, 5, 6.25, 8.33, 9, 10, 12.5, 15, 20, 25, 30, 50 or 100 kHz. Pushing [2 SWEEP] alone (for 1 second) changes to the next step and starts a single sweep.
  3. Push [SCOPE] for a single sweep, or hold it for 1 second for a continuous sweep. Signal strengths appear starting from the centre.
  4. Rotate [R-DIAL] to move the highlighted cursor to a signal and set that frequency.
  5. Hold [3 CENTER] for 1 second to return to the original centre frequency.
  6. Push [DUALWATCH] to cancel and return to normal.

A quick alternative: hold [2 SWEEP] for 1 second to start a single sweep.

Scope Audio

Set mode, SCOPE AF OUTPUT (default OFF) turns on audio during a sweep, so you can tell whether a signal is modulated, unmodulated or a beat.
