IC-R8600 Maintenance, Reset, Firmware & Calibration

Summary: How to clean the IC-R8600, reset it, calibrate the touch screen and update the firmware.

Cleaning

Wipe with a dry soft cloth; never use benzine, alcohol or other harsh solvents. Wipe the touch screen gently with a soft dry cloth.

Resetting

If odd information shows (from static electricity, for example), turn the receiver off, wait a few seconds and turn it on. If it persists do a Partial Reset, then an All Reset if needed.

  • Partial Reset (MENU, SET, Others, Reset, Partial reset, Yes): resets the timer settings, NTP server address, scope edges and Set mode items to defaults. Network settings, the reference frequency, memory channels and the opening comment are kept. The receiver restarts.
  • All Reset (Reset, All reset, NEXT, read the message, YES): clears everything to factory defaults, including memory channels. Save your settings to the SD card first.
  • If the touch screen won’t respond and you can’t reach the Set mode: turn the receiver off, hold two keys as the manual shows (the labels are icons in the document) and push POWER. “ALL RESET” appears on the opening screen; repeat if it doesn’t.

Touch Screen Calibration

If the touched point and the detected point differ: MENU, SET, Others, Touch Screen Calibration, touch each white dot as it appears, and check it works. If you can’t reach the menu, turn the receiver off, hold MENU and EXIT, push POWER to show the “Touch Window Calibration” screen, release, and repeat the calibration.

Firmware Version

Shown on the opening screen, and in MENU, SET, Others, Information, Version (the main CPU version).

Updating the Firmware

Download the IC-R8600 firmware (8600XXXX.dat, inside a zip file) from the Icom support website (Firmware/Software, search IC-R8600, agree to the terms). Never turn the receiver off during the update: if it’s interrupted (power off or power failure) the firmware will be damaged and the receiver will have to go back to an Icom distributor for a repair that isn’t covered by the warranty.

  1. Format the SD card in the receiver (see IC-R8600 SD Card, Settings & Screen Capture).
  2. Copy the firmware file into the card’s IC-R8600 folder from a PC.
  3. Put the card in the receiver.
  4. MENU, SET, SD Card, Firmware Update.
  5. Scroll through and read the agreement and precautions, then touch YES.
  6. Touch the firmware file, read the final precautions, and touch YES for 1 second.
  7. When “Firmware updating has completed.” shows, the receiver restarts.

If the file list shows “- No File -“, the file isn’t on the card, the card isn’t formatted, or the file has been renamed (download it again).
