IC-R30 Memory Channels: Groups, Writing & Editing

Summary: How the IC-R30 stores 2,000 memory channels in groups, and how to write, view, copy, move, insert, name and clear them.

How Memory Is Organised

There are 2,000 memory channels in 100 groups (00-99). There are also two special groups: A: Auto MW CH (200 channels written automatically by an Auto Memory Write scan) and S: SKIP CH (100 skip channels). Unlike some Icom receivers there are no categories: the tree is Manage Memory, then the groups. Beyond these, there are 50 pairs of program scan edges and 300 GPS memories.

A memory channel can store: name, frequency, tuning step, receive mode, duplex direction and offset, RF gain, scan skip setting, tone or DTCS squelch (FM/FM-N), VSC, digital code squelch (digital modes), descrambler (dPMR), decryption (NXDN and DCR), and GPS position data.

Back up your memory. It can be erased by static electricity, electrical transients, a malfunction or a repair. Save it to a microSD card or use the CS-R30 software.

Selecting a Channel

Push [MR], then [BAND] to choose a group and rotate [DIAL]. Only channels with contents are shown. To type a channel number push [F-INP] and key in the number (two digits sets it; press ENTER after a single digit). To step through channels in all groups set Channel Select Group Range to All Groups in the Quick Menu.

Viewing a Channel

MENU, Manage Memory, choose the group and channel. Push [QUICK] and choose Edit to change it.

Writing a Channel

To a blank channel: set the frequency and mode in VFO mode, then hold [MW] until the beep. The contents show for two seconds and are written to the first blank channel in the current group.

To a specific channel:

  1. In VFO mode set the frequency and mode.
  2. Push [MW] and choose Write to New CH or Write to Selected CH.
  3. Push [QUICK], Group Select, choose the group, and rotate [DIAL] to pick the channel (it blinks).
  4. Push [MW] and choose YES.

The QUICK options include NAME, SKIP, Group Select, <<Write>> and <<Insert Write>> (inserts above the selected channel).

Copy, Move, Insert, Clear

In Manage Memory choose the group and channel (don’t push ENTER), push [QUICK] and choose:

  • Copy to VFO ([MW], Copy to VFO): puts a memory channel into the VFO.
  • Copy – then the destination (use Group Select for another group).
  • Move – to another group or position; other channels move up. Insert end of list puts it last.
  • Insert – a blank channel above the selected one. Inserting at channel 99 deletes it (after confirmation). On the group list, Insert Group inserts a blank group.
  • Clear / Delete – empty or remove the channel.

Names

Channels and groups take names of up to 16 characters (you can’t rename groups A and S). Edit, NAME, enter it, ENTER, then <<Overwrite>> and YES. Display, Display Type decides whether the name or the frequency is shown larger.

Skip Setting

Edit, SKIP: OFF, SKIP (skipped in memory scans) or PSKIP (skipped in VFO and memory scans). In Memory mode you can push [SKIP] to change it. See IC-R30 Scanning: VFO, Memory, Tone & Near Station Scans.

Squawker

The IC-R30’s memory can be imported and exported as CSV files; see IC-R30 microSD Card: Backup, CSV Import/Export & SD Card Mode and IC-R30 Loading Frequencies From Squawker PC & Squawker Online.
