TRX-2E Setup: Antenna, Headphones & Speakers

Summary: How to fit an antenna on the TRX-2E, and connect headphones or an extension speaker safely.

Antenna

  1. Line up the slots around the antenna’s connector with the tabs on the antenna jack.
  2. Press the antenna down over the jack and turn its base clockwise until it locks.
  3. Mobile use requires an external antenna. Follow the instructions supplied with the antenna, always use 50-ohm coaxial cable such as RG-58 or RG-213 (low-loss dielectric), and you may need a BNC adapter.

Safety: take extreme care installing or removing an outdoor antenna; if it starts to fall, let it go, because contact with overhead power lines can kill. Outdoor antennas must be properly grounded against static and lightning (the guide’s diagram shows a ground clamp, lightning arrestor and grounding conductors; the standards it quotes are US ones, so follow your own local requirements), and the radio should be disconnected from an outdoor antenna during electrical storms.

Headphones

For private listening plug 3.5 mm mini-plug earphones or headphones (not supplied) into the headphone jack on the front. This disconnects the internal speaker. Don’t plug headphones into the external speaker jack on the rear.

Extension Speaker

In noisy places, or in a vehicle, an extension speaker (not supplied) can be more comfortable. Plug its 3.5 mm mini-plug into the EXT. SP jack on the rear panel.

Listening Safely

  • Set the volume to zero before putting headphones on, then raise it to a comfortable level.
  • Avoid increasing the volume once set; your sensitivity drops over time, so a level that doesn’t seem uncomfortable may still damage your hearing.
  • Avoid or limit high volume; prolonged exposure can cause permanent hearing loss.
  • Don’t wear headphones while driving; they can create a traffic hazard and are illegal in most places.
