DJ-X100E Getting Started: Antenna, Turning On, Volume & Squelch

Summary: Fitting the antenna and belt clip, turning the DJ-X100E on, and setting the frequency, volume, squelch and monitor.

Antenna and Belt Clip

  • Antenna (EA-295): hold it by the base, align the grooves with the protrusions on the connector, slide down and turn clockwise until it stops. Check it’s secure from time to time. The whip is designed mainly for outdoor use: use a suitable external antenna indoors.
  • Belt clip (EBC-65): attached at delivery; unscrew counter-clockwise to remove. Use only the supplied screws, and check them regularly since the clip is a consumable.
  • Careful with the whip in a shirt pocket (it can injure an eye), and don’t bend or twist it.

Turning On and Off

Hold [POWER] for about 1 second. The logo, model, firmware number and battery voltage or USB show before the reception screen. To turn off, hold until “Turn Power Off” shows and release.

Setting a Frequency

  • With the dial: the frequency moves by the set step. With FUNC lit the dial changes 10 times the step (Memory mode: 10 channels).
  • With the keypad: key in the MHz, press [SKIP (.)], then the kHz, then [SET] (or enter 6 kHz digits). Examples: 123.000 MHz is 1, 2, 3, SET; 123.45 MHz is 1, 2, 3, ., 4, 5, SET. [MONI] starts again. An unreceivable frequency gives an error sound. Entering 76-108 MHz switches to FM radio mode.
  • The receiver doesn’t round a keyed frequency to the step, but the dial then moves in the set step.

Volume

33 levels, 0 to 32, default 0. Turn the ring (clockwise is louder). At 0 you may hear a buzzing in the default state: the buzz is a guide for setting the volume, since it stops when the squelch is set. Volume and squelch are kept when power is off. Lower the volume before putting on earphones.

Squelch

[FUNC] then [MONI], then turn the dial while <SQL> and the level show: 0-32 (default 0, which leaves the squelch open). Set it just high enough to remove the noise, and high enough that the BUSY icon disappears when there’s no digital signal, so scanning works properly. Set mode, Operations, Vol/Sql Swap lets you adjust the squelch while FUNC is lit.

S-Meter and BUSY Icons

It’s normal for the meter to show levels (noise) even with the squelch closed. If you prefer a conventional meter: SET, Display, S-Meter Set, Busy Linked. In analogue modes the solid BUSY icon lights when a signal is received; an outlined one means the squelch opened but no audio is output (for example wrong CTCSS/DCS). In digital modes the solid icon means a possibly decodable signal; audio may still be corrupted by signal strength, format or code settings.

Monitor

Hold [MONI] to open the squelch for weak or interrupted signals (it also switches off tone squelch and DCS in analogue). By default it works only while pressed; Set mode, MONI Settings can make it Alternate (press to toggle). BUSY blinks while monitoring.

FUNC Key

The FUNC status times out after 5 seconds by default; Set mode, Operations, FUNC Hold Time (5, 10, 20, 30 seconds or Hold) changes it. Hold is recommended while you’re getting used to it.
