IC-R8600 USB, LAN, CI-V & Remote Control

Summary: Every connector setting on the IC-R8600: USB and LAN audio/IF output, serial data, CI-V, network settings, the RS-R8600 remote control, I/Q output and the reference input.

AF, IF and Audio Outputs (SET, Connectors)

Each of AF/IF, USB (Front), USB (Rear) and LAN has an Output Select: AF (demodulated audio) or IF (a 12 kHz IF signal, for Digital Radio Mondiale (DRM) decoding with PC receiver software), plus, depending on the port:

  • AF Output Level / IF Output Level (default 50%; at 50% the output is 200 mV RMS)
  • AF SQL (default OFF (OPEN): the audio is always output; ON follows the squelch)
  • AF Beep/Speech Output (OFF) or, for LAN, AF Speech Output (OFF)
  • Phones Level Ratio (1.00, 0.40-2.00): headphone level relative to the speaker

Serial Data Over USB

USB (Front) or USB (Rear) > Serial Function (default FSK Decode): FSK Decode or D-STAR Data, with the FSK Decode Baud Rate (4800, 9600, 19200, 38400; default 9600) and D-STAR Data Baud Rate (4800 or 9600; default 9600).

CI-V (SET, Connectors, CI-V)

CI-V lets a PC control the receiver (frequency, mode and so on) over USB or the [REMOTE] jack. The CI-V command list is on Icom’s support site.

  • CI-V Address (default 96h; 02h-DFh): each receiver needs its own address if several are connected.
  • CI-V Baud Rate (Auto): 4800, 9600, 19200 or Auto.
  • CI-V Transceive (default ON): whether the status is output so other connected Icom equipment follows changes.
  • USB/LAN->REMOTE Transceive Address (00h): the address used with the RS-R8600 through USB or LAN; the control signal is output from [REMOTE].
  • CI-V USB (Front) Baud Rate (Auto; 4800-115200) and Echo Back (OFF).
  • CI-V USB (Rear) Port (default Unlink from [REMOTE]): Link to [REMOTE] connects the rear USB and [REMOTE] jack internally; Unlink makes them independent (duplex communication). CI-V USB (Rear) Baud Rate (Auto) and Echo Back (OFF) apply only when unlinked.
  • To control dedicated equipment when several devices are connected, use the same CI-V address.

External Meter and Reference

  • External Meter Output (Signal): Signal or Signal+SQL. External Meter Level (50%; 8 V at full scale).
  • REF IN/OUT (OFF): IN uses an external 10 MHz reference, OUT outputs the internal one. Use OFF or OUT unless you have a reliable, accurate source: a poor input makes the frequency readout blink and the receiver misbehave.

I/Q Output

The [I/Q OUT] USB port outputs I/Q data for SDR applications or DRM. Download the IQ driver and guide from Icom’s support site.

Network (SET, Network)

  • DHCP (default ON) or a static IP Address (default 192.168.0.10), Subnet Mask (255.255.255.0), Default Gateway, Primary DNS Server and 2nd DNS Server. These take effect after a restart.
  • Network Name, Network Radio Name (default IC-R8600), Network Control (default OFF; ON for remote control after restart), Power OFF Setting (for Remote Control) (Shutdown only, or Standby/Shutdown).
  • Control Port (UDP) 50001, Serial Port (UDP) 50002, Audio Port (UDP) 50003, Internet Access Line (FTTH).
  • Network User1/User2: ID, password and Administrator (NO; only administrators can disconnect the remote link).

Remote Control With the RS-R8600

The optional RS-R8600 remote control software lets a PC control the receiver over the network or USB. Turn Network Control on, set the user IDs and passwords, and use the same ports on both ends. “Network control” shows on the display when remotely controlled; push LOCAL to return to local control. Icom doesn’t guarantee the performance of PCs or network equipment.

Programming With the CS-R8600

The optional CS-R8600 cloning software connects over USB. Others, Clone, Clone Mode puts the receiver into clone mode (restart to cancel).
