Recording Folders – Standard vs Extended, and How Groups Are Named
Summary: The two ways recordings can be organised on disk, and how Extended layout works out which group folder a clip belongs in.
Every recording is saved under your chosen folder, then a subfolder for the profile, then a subfolder for the day – from there, the Folders setting in Recording settings decides what happens next.
Standard
Every clip for that day goes straight into the day’s folder, named with the date and time, the frequency, and the user/description from the log entry.
Extended
Clips are additionally sorted into a folder named for the group the frequency belongs to, with the date, frequency and name arranged slightly differently in the filename itself.
How a Group Is Decided
The group comes from Squawker’s own frequency data, not anything the scanner itself reports:
- Aviation frequencies – a National value, if the frequency has one, is used as-is. Otherwise, Airports, Airbases, Airfields, or Heliports, based on the entry’s class. Failing that, it’s split into Civil ATC or Military ATC by keywords in the name.
- Common Scanner Frequencies – grouped by their own category, or “Common” if that’s blank.
- WTR frequencies – always grouped as “Business Radio”.
- Repeaters – grouped by band, e.g. “Repeaters 2m”.
- Anything that doesn’t match one of Squawker’s own datasets is filed under “Unidentified”.
There’s deliberately no separate Active Mil group – a hit matched against Active Mil data is still grouped using the underlying aviation entry for that frequency, so it ends up in the same place a non-Active-Mil aviation hit on that frequency would.
If a clip runs past the maximum length and continues into a new file, both layouts keep the continuation clearly named as a further part of the same recording.
