Reading the Screen & Status Bar

Summary: The two VFO lines, and what each abbreviation and icon on the status bar means.

Upper and Lower VFO

The display is split into an upper and a lower VFO. The active one, the main VFO, is marked with an arrow. Switch between them with F then 2 A/B, or by long-pressing 2 A/B.

Each VFO works independently in frequency mode or channel mode. Select the VFO you want, then press F then 3 VFO/MR (or long-press 3 VFO/MR) to switch that one.

The Status Bar

The top line packs in a lot of information:

  • MO, DW, DWR, XB – the receive mode (RxMode): Main Only, Main TX with Dual RX, Dual RX Respond, and Cross Band.
  • CL / OP – PTT mode: Classic, or One Push.
  • PS – Power Save is active.
  • VX – VOX is on.
  • F icon – you have pressed F and the next key will use its second function.
  • Padlock icon – the keypad is locked.
  • Light icon – manual backlight control is on.
  • Battery – shown as voltage or as a percentage, depending on the BatTxt setting.
  • RX timer – how long since a signal was last received, when the timers are switched on.
  • Scan list name with arrows – shown in reverse video while scanning that list; ALL with arrows means all listed channels are being scanned.

Padlock Next to a Channel Name

A small padlock beside a channel or VFO name means transmitting on it is blocked because it is outside your selected band plan. See the article on F Lock and TXLock.

RxMode Explained

  • Main only (MO) – always receives and transmits on the main VFO.
  • Dual RX respond (DWR) – listens to both VFOs; if a signal arrives on the second, it locks to it for a couple of seconds so you can reply.
  • Cross band (XB) – transmits on the main VFO and listens on the other.
  • Main TX, dual RX (DW) – always transmits on the main VFO but listens to both.
