AR-DV10 Getting Started: Antenna, Power, Volume & Frequency

Summary: The first steps with the AR-DV10: antenna, switching on, volume, VFO selection and entering frequencies.

Antenna

Fit the RA-10 flexible antenna: make sure the antenna ring is on the jack, align the slots with the pins, and turn a quarter turn clockwise to lock (anticlockwise to remove). There’s no internal AM ferrite antenna, and the flexible antenna isn’t ideal for long, medium and shortwave, so use a proper external antenna for those. The RF stage is very sensitive, so use an external attenuator with an external antenna to avoid overload.

Earphone antenna: [MENU] > OPT > EAR ANT > ON. The earphone cable then acts as an antenna for FM broadcast (64-107.99999 MHz, 100 kHz IF bandwidth only) and “EAR” shows.

Power On and Off

Press the red POWER button briefly (about 3 seconds to be ready). Hold it 3 seconds to switch off; settings and frequency are saved during the 3-second shutdown. Don’t interrupt power suddenly or the settings aren’t kept.

Volume

Turn the inner volume knob. It controls the speaker, earphones and beeps. Set the beep separately in [MENU] > CONF > BEEP (00 off to 15). VOL ATT limits the maximum volume (00 = full, 15 = most reduced, default 5).

The Three VFOs

VFO-A, VFO-B and VFO-Z, each with its own frequency, mode and step, but only one is active. Select VFO-A with [MENU] then [ENT] twice; VFO-B or VFO-Z with [MENU], [ENT], then choose B or Z and [ENT]. Press [ENT] to switch between A and B.

Entering a Frequency

  • Keypad: type MHz and [ENT]: 439.49 MHz is 4, 3, 9, ., 4, 9, ENT. For frequencies under 1 MHz start with 0 or a decimal point. The delete key removes one digit; [CLR] cancels.
  • Dial: each click moves one step (shown top right).
  • Up/down keys: move ten times the step.
