AR-DV1 Receive Modes & Digital Auto Mode

Summary: The AR-DV1’s analogue and digital receive modes, and how digital auto mode works.

Selecting a Mode

Press [MODE], turn the dial to the mode and press [ENT]. Any mode can be used at any frequency. The choices are AUTO, FM, AM, SAH, SAL, USB, LSB, CW, DSTR, YAES, DMR, D-CR, dPMR, P-25 and ALINC. Whichever you select, the default IF bandwidth for it is applied.

Analogue Modes

  • FM – narrow FM is the norm above 30 MHz (marine VHF, amateur, PMR, utilities); wide FM is for broadcast.
  • AM – broadcast bands, VHF airband and UHF military air.
  • SAH / SAL (synchronous AM) – reduces fading distortion on shortwave broadcasts; choose the higher or lower sideband with the least noise.
  • USB / LSB – amateur SSB (by convention LSB below 10 MHz and USB above) and shortwave utility.
  • CW – Morse.

Digital Modes

Decoded modes: D-STAR (DSTR), Yaesu digital (YAES), DMR, Digital CR and NXDN (D-CR), dPMR, APCO P25 Phase 1 (P-25) and Alinco EJ-47U (ALINC). The IF bandwidth is selected automatically.

Digital Auto Mode

Hold [MODE] for two seconds, or choose AUTO in the mode list. The receiver is set to FM and detects and decodes the digital mode itself. It’s handy when you don’t know what’s on a frequency. It’s cancelled as soon as you change the receive mode.

Digital Data Display

With DIG.DECODE set to ON in the option menu ([F] then [9]), information about the signal (for example call signs) shows at the bottom of the LCD.

Encryption and Limits

The AR-DV1 decodes non-encrypted digital voice only. Encrypted, trunked and some other variants are not supported: check the compatibility chart in AR-DV1 Specifications & Digital Mode Compatibility.
