DJ-X100E Receive Modes: Analogue, Digital & Data

Summary: The DJ-X100E’s receive modes, how to select them, and what the automatic signalling analysis does.

Selecting a Mode

  1. Push [MODE] to show the Receive Mode screen.
  2. Turn the dial to choose Analog, Digital or Data, press [SET] or [MODE].
  3. Turn the dial to choose the mode and press [SET] or [MODE] again.

Analogue

  • FM – classic 20 kHz-step FM communications, such as VHF marine.
  • NFM – narrow FM, for 12.5 kHz UHF communications.
  • AM – typically for aeronautical radio. NAM – narrow AM with a slightly narrower filter to avoid interference from neighbouring stations (it can sound like the high frequencies are cut, which may help with weak signals).
  • WFM is used for FM broadcast (76-108 MHz) in FM radio mode.

Digital

DCR, NXDN, DMR, D-STAR, dPMR and C4FM (DN). D-STAR is voice only. See DJ-X100E Communication Settings (CONFIG).

Data

  • AIS – Automatic Identification System for ships (162 MHz region).
  • ACARS – Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System.
  • 12kIF(W) and 12kIF(N) – the received signal as a 12 kHz IF output (bandwidths 15 kHz and 6 kHz) for third-party receiver software; not used for normal reception.

The decoding is compatible with other systems too, but appropriate software may be needed.

Automatic Signalling Analysis

Without special settings the receiver automatically analyses CTCSS/DCS tones, D-STAR call signs (CS), C4FM DG-ID and DCR/NXDN user codes, showing them at the bottom of the reception screen in VFO and Memory mode. DCR/NXDN sequence codes (E version only) can also be decoded with the code set to AUTO. You can write down what it finds and register it on a memory channel for selective reception.

  • The signal must be strong enough for proper decoding.
  • During digital decoding the start of the audio may be corrupted; that’s normal.

Battery Save and Digital Reception

Turn Battery Save off for digital and data reception: it can disturb decoding. It’s fine (and recommended) in analogue mode. See DJ-X100E Set Mode Reference.

Good Reception

The supplied whip is mainly for outdoor use; an external antenna helps indoors. In strong-field areas (such as near transmitters) broadcasts can overlay airband signals: use the attenuator.
