IC-R20 Safety & Precautions

Summary: The important safety and precaution information from the IC-R20 manual, in plain English.

Warnings

  • Never use earphones, headphones or other audio accessories at high volume for long periods; if your ears ring, reduce the volume or stop.
  • Never connect the receiver to an AC outlet (fire or shock), never connect it to more than 6 V DC directly, and never with reverse polarity.
  • Never operate the receiver while driving.
  • Never throw a battery cell or pack on a fire, disassemble the battery pack, solder a battery cell, or short the battery terminals (careful with packs in handbags). If battery electrolyte gets into your eyes, wash with water and get medical treatment at once.
  • Never mix old and new batteries or different types.
  • Never expose the receiver to rain, snow or liquids, or touch it with wet hands.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and temperatures below -10 C or above +60 C. Don’t clean it with benzine, alcohol or other chemicals.
  • Remove the batteries or pack for long storage: a small current flows even when it’s off.
  • Charge at 0 to +35 C with the supplied or optional Icom charger only; never charge dry cells.

Privacy

The manual says to respect other people’s privacy: information overheard but not intended for you cannot lawfully be used in any way. Check the rules where you live.

FCC (USA Only)

Changes or modifications not expressly approved by Icom could void your authority to operate the device under FCC regulations. The manual’s front cover notes that modifying the device to receive cellular radiotelephone signals is prohibited under FCC rules and federal law.

Operating Notes

The receiver may receive its own oscillated frequency on some frequencies, giving no reception or only noise, and may receive interference from extremely strong signals on other frequencies or when using an external high-gain antenna.
