IC-R8600 Recording & Playback

Summary: How to record received audio to the IC-R8600’s SD card, play it back, and manage files and folders.

Before You Start

An SD card is required. If it has no IC-R8600 folder, back up its data, insert it and format it in the receiver (see IC-R8600 SD Card, Settings & Screen Capture). Once recording starts it continues even if you turn the receiver off and on, until you stop it. The recording ends when you stop it or the card is full; a file reaching 2 GB continues in a new file.

Recording

  • Quick recording: push QUICK, touch <<REC Start>>; the SD card LED blinks. Push QUICK and touch <<REC Stop>> to stop.
  • Normal recording: MENU, RECORD, adjust Recorder Set if needed, touch <<REC Start>>, then <<REC Stop>>.
  • The record icon shows the status (blue blink while recording; a different icon while paused).
  • By default recording is paused while the squelch is closed.
  • The timer can start recording automatically: start a recording, then turn the receiver off; when the timer turns it on, recording starts (see IC-R8600 Clock, Timers & NTP).

Recorder Set

  • REC Condition (Squelch Auto): Always records even with no signal; Squelch Auto records only when the squelch opens.
  • File Split (ON): a new file starts whenever the squelch opens or closes. OFF keeps one file (splitting at 2 GB).
  • Player Set, Skip Time: the fast forward and rewind step (default 10 seconds).

Playback

  1. MENU, RECORD, Play Files, choose the date folder then the file. Playback continues through the folder and stops after the last file.
  2. Keys: previous file, next file, rewind and fast forward (by the skip time), pause and play. The screen shows the file number, elapsed and total time, and the called and caller call signs (in digital modes).

Managing Files

Touch a file for 1 second for the QUICK MENU: File Information (recording start time, frequency and mode), Delete, Delete All (all files in the folder). Touch a folder for 1 second for folder information, Delete and Delete All Folders. Deleting a folder deletes all its files, and deletions can’t be undone.

Playing on a PC

Put the SD card in a PC card reader (or slot), open the card’s Voice folder, then the date folder (yyyymmdd), and open a WAV file in a player (some may need suitable software). Frequency and date information isn’t shown on the PC.
