IC-R8600 Rear Panel, Connectors & Connections

Summary: What each rear panel connector on the IC-R8600 is for, with the electrical details.

Rear Panel

  • [DC 13.8 V] – the supplied DC power cable. [DC IN] – the optional SP-39AD (external speaker with power adapter) or AD-55NS (power adapter); connect the supplied DC power short connector to [DC 13.8 V] first.
  • [GND] – ground terminal.
  • [ANT1] N-type, 10 kHz-3000 MHz, 50 ohm. [ANT2] SO-239, 10 kHz-30 MHz, 50 ohm. [ANT3] RCA, 10 kHz-30 MHz, 500 ohm unbalanced (suits a long wire or T2FD).
  • [AUX] – reserved (no internal connection).
  • [METER] – external analogue meter output: signal strength, or signal plus squelch level (8 V maximum, 10 kohm output impedance; 8 V at full scale into 10 kohm).
  • [REF I/O 10MHz] (BNC) – inputs or outputs a 10 MHz reference: -10 dBm, 50 ohm, stability +/-0.5 ppm.
  • [10.7MHz OUT] (BNC) – a 10.7 MHz IF signal (10 MHz bandwidth fixed regardless of the PBT filter), 50 ohm, about -10 dBm maximum.
  • [I/Q OUT] (USB type B) – phase and quadrature data from the FPGA, for SDR software or DRM demodulation. Icom gives no support for SDR software beyond checking that the output signal is normal.
  • [EXT-SP] (3.5 mm) – external speaker, 4-8 ohm; more than 2 W into 8 ohm at 10% distortion.
  • [AF/IF] (3.5 mm) – demodulated AF or a 12 kHz IF signal (unfiltered), 4.7 kohm, 100-300 mV RMS; the level is fixed regardless of the volume control.
  • [REMOTE] (3.5 mm) – CI-V control of the receiver.
  • [USB] (type B) – rear USB port (also a mini-B on the front): FSK (RTTY) decoded data or D-STAR data, demodulated audio or 12 kHz IF signal, RS-R8600 remote control, CS-R8600 programming, and CI-V control.
  • [MUTE] jack and switch – slide the switch left to use the Mute function (grounding the jack turns the receive circuit off; sink current about 1 mA at 8 V input), useful when using the receiver alongside a transceiver. Slide it right for the Bit Error Rate (BER) measurement function (a maintenance function).
  • [LAN] – network: NTP time sync, audio or 12 kHz IF output, and RS-R8600 remote control. The LEDs show link/activity and speed (lit = 100BASE-TX).

The front panel has [PHONES] and a mini-B [USB].

Connections in Use

  • PC with RTTY software: a USB cable (user supplied, type B) to the rear or front USB port; choose the FSK output port in SET, Connectors, USB (Front)/(Rear). Icom doesn’t guarantee the performance of the PC, software or network equipment.
  • USB driver: download the USB driver and installation guide from Icom’s support site.
  • The included cables CAB-1258 and OPC-1605 are shown in the connection diagram for the speaker and power adapter.

See IC-R8600 USB, LAN, CI-V & Remote Control for the settings.
