IC-R30 Safety, Battery Cautions & Compliance

Summary: The important safety, battery and compliance information from the IC-R30 manuals, in plain English, including the CE and voice-coding notices.

Precautions

  • Never operate near unshielded electrical blasting caps or in an explosive atmosphere.
  • Never use or charge Icom battery packs with non-Icom receivers or chargers, or use third-party or counterfeit packs or chargers (smoke, fire or bursting).
  • Never use earphones or accessories at high volume for long periods.
  • Don’t operate the receiver while driving.
  • Don’t short the battery terminals; don’t connect the receiver to a supply above the specified voltage or with reversed polarity.
  • Don’t use the receiver unless the antenna, battery pack and covers are firmly attached and dry. After exposure to water, clean the battery contacts in fresh water and dry them.
  • Don’t use harsh solvents; don’t leave it in direct sunlight or outside -20 to +60 C; don’t change internal settings (the warranty doesn’t cover unauthorised adjustment).
  • The IP57 protection can’t be guaranteed after the receiver has been dropped or the seal damaged.

Battery and Charging Cautions

Misusing Li-ion batteries can cause smoke, fire or rupture. Never strike or drop a pack, expose it to temperatures above 60 C (including a hot car or sun), place it near a fire, solder or modify it, or put it in a microwave or induction cooker. Never let battery fluid reach your eyes (rinse with clean water without rubbing and see a doctor) or skin. Don’t use a pack that smells, heats, discolours or deforms. Use it between -20 and +60 C and charge it only between 15 and 40 C (Icom recommends 25 C); charging in the wrong range can make it heat up or rupture. Don’t charge during lightning, don’t charge a wet or soiled receiver in the charger (the charger isn’t waterproof), and don’t leave the pack charging beyond the specified time. For long storage, use the pack down to about half capacity and keep it cool and dry (-20 to +50 C for a month, up to +40 C for three months, up to +20 C for a year). Replace it about five years after manufacture.

GPS Notes

GPS reception can be blocked by metal and buildings; see IC-R30 GPS: Position, Memory, Alarm & Logger.

Disposal, CE and Other Notices

  • In the EU (and UK), electrical products, batteries and accumulators must be taken to a designated collection point, not put in household waste.
  • Icom declares that IC-R30 versions with the CE mark comply with the Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU and the RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU. The EU declaration of conformity is on the Icom support website.
  • Voice coding: the AMBE+2 voice coding technology is licensed by Digital Voice Systems, Inc., solely for use within this equipment; you may not extract, decompile, reverse engineer or disassemble it.
  • US and Canada: the manual includes FCC Class B and ISED notices. Modifying the receiver to receive cellular radiotelephone signals is prohibited under FCC rules and US federal law.
  • Trademarks: Icom and the Icom logo are registered trademarks of Icom Incorporated; NXDN is a trademark of Icom and JVC KENWOOD; dPMR is a trademark of the dPMR MoU Association; the Bluetooth word mark is used under licence.

Scanning Legally

The manuals don’t include a legal notice about listening. Check the rules where you live before using the receiver, particularly for digital and encrypted or scrambled signals.
