IC-R30 Firmware Updates, Reset & Maintenance

Summary: How to check and update the IC-R30’s firmware, how to do a Partial or All Reset, and how to look after the receiver.

Check the Version

MENU, Others, Version.

Update the Firmware

Download the firmware for the IC-R30 from Icom’s Firmware Updates/Software Downloads page (accept the terms; the download is a zip file containing the firmware and a utility) and unzip it to get R30E….dat. Update at your own risk: some updates may reset the receiver’s settings, so read the download page’s notes and back up your settings and memory channels first. Never start an update with a low battery or when using the optional battery case, and never turn the receiver off during the update: if it’s interrupted, the firmware can be damaged and the receiver would need to go back to an Icom distributor for a repair that isn’t covered by warranty.

  1. Format the microSD card in the receiver (see IC-R30 Getting Started: Accessories, microSD Card & First Steps).
  2. Connect the receiver to the PC by USB and turn it on (leave the card in).
  3. MENU, Function, USB Connect, SD Card Mode, YES.
  4. Copy the downloaded firmware file into the IC-R30 folder on the card, then eject the device safely and disconnect.
  5. MENU, SD Card, Firmware Update, and follow the prompts and precautions (choose YES twice). The receiver restarts when the update completes.

Resetting

If odd information appears (from static electricity, for example) turn the receiver off, wait a few seconds and turn it on. If it persists, do a Partial Reset, then an All Reset if needed.

  • Partial Reset – MENU, Others, Reset, Partial Reset, YES. Resets the menu settings, RX history log and VFO operating settings to defaults. Memory channels, program scan edges and GPS memories are kept. The receiver restarts.
  • All Reset – MENU, Others, Reset, All Reset, NEXT, YES. Clears all data (memory channels, scan edges, GPS memories, settings) to factory defaults. The Bluetooth pairing list is kept. Save your settings to the card first.

Maintenance

  • Clean with a soft dry cloth; no benzine, alcohol or harsh solvents.
  • After salt water, clean the receiver thoroughly in a bowl of fresh water and dry it, otherwise salt crystals can make keys, switches and controls unusable and corrode the battery terminals.
  • If the waterproofing seems damaged, clean with a soft damp cloth, dry it, and ask your dealer. It can be lost if the case, jack cap or cover is cracked or broken, or after a drop. The IP57 rating applies only with the BP-287, antenna, jack cap and slot cover fitted.
  • Avoid direct sunlight and temperatures outside -20 to +60 C. Remove the battery for long storage.
  • Dark or light dots on the LCD are normal.

Operating Notes

The receiver may pick up its own oscillator on some frequencies (no reception or only noise). Very strong signals on other frequencies, or a high-gain external antenna, may cause interference. Spurious signals from the receiver’s own circuits, and noise while charging, aren’t faults. When the GPS is active, don’t cover the top of the receiver.
