IC-R30 Band Scope

Summary: How to use the IC-R30’s Band Scope to see signals in a range around the displayed frequency.

What It Does

The Band Scope shows the relative signal strength across a range centred on the displayed frequency, so you can find signals visually. It works on the MAIN band and has two types:

  • Single Sweep – sweeps once, from the lower frequency to the upper.
  • Continuous Sweep – repeats the sweep.

The sweep width is fixed at 15 times the tuning step either side of the centre. For example, at 146.000 MHz with a 5 kHz step the sweep runs from 145.925 to 146.075 MHz. Use a tuning step of 20 kHz or less; with a wider step signals can be skipped even if strong.

Sweeping

  1. Push [VFO] for VFO mode and set the centre frequency (for example 146.010 MHz).
  2. Push [SCOPE] and choose Continuous Sweep (or Single Sweep). The sweep starts.
  3. Push [CLEAR] to stop it.
  4. Rotate [DIAL] to move the marker to a detected signal; you can hear its audio.
  5. [SCOPE], Center Recall returns the marker to the centre frequency.
  6. [SCOPE], Scope OFF turns the Band Scope off.

Audio During a Sweep

Between 108.000 and 520.000 MHz the audio of the displayed frequency is output during a sweep (not in WFM, LSB, USB, CW or CW-R). Turn it off with Sounds, Scope AF Output.

The Band Scope is cancelled by starting a Priority Watch, and the two can’t be used together (see IC-R30 Priority Watch & Home Channel).
