IC-R30 Getting Started: Accessories, microSD Card & First Steps

Summary: Fitting the antenna, strap and belt clip, inserting and formatting a microSD card, switching on and saving your settings for the first time.

Attaching Accessories

  • Battery pack: turn the receiver off first (see IC-R30 Battery, Charging & Power).
  • Antenna: screw the supplied antenna onto the SMA connector, holding the base to tighten it.
  • Hand strap: attach it, and never swing the receiver by it.
  • Belt clip: slide it on until it clicks; to remove, lift the tab and slide the clip off.

Inserting a microSD Card

Turn the receiver off, open the [microSD] slot cover, and with the terminals facing the front push the card in until it clicks. To remove it, push it in until it clicks and pull it out. Don’t touch the terminals, force the card, or remove it while it’s being accessed. Close the slot cover firmly or dust and water may get in.

Usable cards: microSD up to 2 GB or microSDHC up to 32 GB (Icom tested SanDisk 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 GB, as of April 2018; not guaranteed). Format a card in the receiver before use.

The card’s uses include settings backup, memory CSV files, voice recordings, the GPS log and receive history; see IC-R30 microSD Card: Backup, CSV Import/Export & SD Card Mode.

Turning On and Setting the Volume

  • Hold [POWER] for 1 second to turn on (opening message and battery level, then the frequency), and again to turn off.
  • Push the volume keys to adjust the audio. If the volume icon shows, [DIAL] and the volume keys have swapped roles: rotate [DIAL] to change the volume, or push [DIAL SEL] to swap back.
  • Set the clock: MENU, Time Set (date 2000/01/01 to 2099/12/31, 24-hour time). With GPS Time Correct on Auto the GPS receiver sets the time from UTC plus your UTC Offset (default 0:00; for the UK use +1:00 during British Summer Time).

Formatting the Card

MENU, SD Card, Format, then YES. This deletes everything on the card. If “The GPS Logger function is activated.” appears, either turn the logger off first or ignore it and choose YES.

Saving Your Settings

MENU, SD Card, Save Setting, <<New File>>, ENTER, YES. The file is named Setyyyymmdd_xx unless you type a name (no / : ; * < >). The saved icf file can be edited with the optional CS-R30 software.
