IC-R15 Safety, Battery Cautions & Compliance

Summary: The important safety, battery and compliance information from the IC-R15 manuals, in plain English, including the UK/EU declarations.

Precautions

  • Never operate near unshielded electrical blasting caps or in an explosive atmosphere.
  • Never use or charge Icom battery packs with non-Icom receivers or chargers, and don’t use third-party or counterfeit packs or chargers: they can smoke, burn or burst.
  • Never use earphones or accessories at high volume for long periods (it can cause ringing in the ears).
  • Don’t operate the receiver while driving.
  • Don’t short the battery terminals (keys or coins in a bag can do it).
  • Don’t connect the receiver to a supply above the specified DC voltage or with reversed polarity.
  • Don’t use the receiver unless the antenna, battery pack and covers are fitted securely and dry. After water exposure, clean the battery contacts in fresh water and dry them.
  • Don’t use harsh solvents; wipe with a soft dry cloth.
  • Don’t leave it in direct sunlight or in temperatures below -20 C or above +60 C.
  • Don’t change the internal settings. Keep the receiver where unauthorised people can’t use it.
  • The IPX7 waterproofing can’t be guaranteed once the receiver has been dropped or the seal is damaged.

Battery Cautions (Li-ion)

Misuse can cause smoke, fire or rupture. Never burn a pack, strike or drop it, heat it above 60 C (including in a hot car), place it near a fire, solder it, modify it, or put it in a microwave or induction cooker. Don’t let battery fluid reach your eyes (rinse with clean water without rubbing and see a doctor at once) or skin. Don’t use a damaged, smelly, hot, discoloured or deformed pack, and don’t charge a wet one. Use the pack only within -20 to +60 C and charge it only within 15 to 40 C. Dispose of used packs according to local regulations.

Electronic Waste

In the EU (and UK), electrical products, batteries and accumulators must be taken to designated collection points and shouldn’t go in household waste.

CE and UKCA Declarations

Icom declares that versions of the IC-R15 carrying the CE mark comply with the Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU and the RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU; the full EU declaration is on the Icom support website (www.icomjapan.com/support). For the UKCA Declaration of Conformity, contact Icom UK Limited: info@icomuk.co.uk or +44 (0) 1227 741741.

FCC and Canada

For US and Canadian versions the guide includes FCC Class B and Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada notices, and states that modifying the device to receive cellular radiotelephone signals is prohibited under FCC rules and US federal law. The internal Bluetooth unit is FCC ID 2AMWOFSC-BT1036C and IC 23872-FSCBT1036C.

Operating Theory and Trademarks

Radio frequency energy (20 kHz and above) is received and converted to audio (20 Hz to 20 kHz) that drives the speaker. Icom and the Icom logo are registered trademarks of Icom Incorporated; the Bluetooth word mark is owned by Bluetooth SIG, Inc. and used under licence; and the product includes “mbed TLS” open source software.

Scanning Legally

The manuals don’t include a legal notice for listening. Check the rules where you live before using the receiver.
