IC-R15 Troubleshooting & Resetting

Summary: Fixes for common IC-R15 problems, and how to do a Partial Reset or an All Reset.

Common Problems

  • The receiver doesn’t turn on – the battery is exhausted (charge or replace); loose battery connection (clean the terminals); reversed polarity in the battery case.
  • No sound from the speaker – volume too low; squelch too high; the tone squelch is on (turn it off); an external speaker is connected to the jack; a Bluetooth device is connected (disconnect it).
  • Sensitivity is too low and only strong signals are heard – external antenna cable not connected or shorted; the attenuator is on (turn it off).
  • The frequency can’t be set – Key Lock is on (cancel it); you’re not in VFO mode (push [V/MHz]).
  • The displayed frequency is wrong – possible CPU malfunction (reset the receiver), or an external cause (remove and refit the battery).
  • A Program scan won’t start – not in VFO mode; or the same frequency is entered at both scan edges.
  • A Memory scan won’t start – not in Memory mode; or fewer than two memory channels are entered.
  • Distorted noise from the earphone – turn on Earphone Mode (SET, Sounds).
  • Can’t charge – the receiver must be off; the USB cable, hub or port may not supply enough (see IC-R15 Battery, Charging & Power).

Reset Steps

If erroneous information shows (for example from static electricity), first turn the receiver off, wait a few seconds and turn it on. If that doesn’t help, do a Partial Reset; if it still doesn’t help, an All Reset.

Partial Reset – MENU, SET, Others, Reset, Partial Reset, YES. It resets operating settings (VFO frequency, VFO settings, menu contents) to defaults without clearing the Memory channels, scan edges, Radio Memory and opening picture. Bluetooth pairing information is kept.

All Reset – MENU, SET, Others, Reset, All Reset, YES. This clears all data (memory channels, settings) and returns everything to the factory defaults. The Bluetooth pairing list and opening picture are not cleared. Save your settings to the microSD card first so you can reload them (see IC-R15 microSD Card: Backup, CSV Import/Export & SD Card Mode).
