IC-R15 Memory Channels: Groups, Categories & Editing

Summary: How the IC-R15 stores 2,000 memory channels in groups and categories, and how to enter, view, copy, move, name and clear them.

How Memory Is Organised

There are 2,000 memory channels in 100 groups (groups 00-99, each holding channels 00-99). Groups can be gathered into categories (for example Airband or Marine VHF), each with a name and an icon. The MEMORY screen shows the tree: FM Radio Memory, then Memory CH with (No Category), your categories, Auto MW CH, SKIP CH and <<Add Category>>. Each of the 100 groups can belong to only one category.

Each channel can hold: name, operating frequency, tuning step, operating mode, duplex direction and offset, scan skip setting, AF filter, favorite, subaudible tone encoder/tone squelch/DTCS squelch on or off with its frequency or code and polarity, and VSC (tone and VSC for FM/FM-N only).

Beyond the 2,000, there are 25 scan edge pairs, 200 Auto Memory Write channels and 100 Skip channels.

Back up your memory. It can be cleared by static electricity, electrical transients, a malfunction or a repair. Save it to a microSD card (see IC-R15 microSD Card: Backup, CSV Import/Export & SD Card Mode) or to a PC with the CS-R15.

Selecting a Channel

Push [MR], then rotate [DIAL]. Blank channels are skipped. To change group: [QUICK], Select Category/Group. To step through channels in all groups, set Memory Selection Range to All Groups in the Quick Menu.

Viewing a Channel

MENU, MEMORY, Memory CH, choose the category, group and channel. Push [QUICK] and choose Edit to change it.

Writing a Channel from the VFO

  1. Set the frequency, mode and so on in VFO mode.
  2. Hold [MW] for 1 second (a short and a long beep).
  3. Choose Write to New CH (an automatically selected blank channel), or Write to Selected CH to overwrite one.
  4. To pick the place, push [QUICK], Select Category/Group, then the category, group and channel, then [ENT] and YES.

In the Quick Menu options you can also Edit Name, Add to Favorites, Set to SKIP, <<Write>> or <<Insert Write>> (inserts above the selected channel).

Copy, Move, Insert, Clear and Delete

Open the channel in MENU, MEMORY, Memory CH (don’t push ENT), push [QUICK] and choose:

  • Copy – then pick the destination (confirm to overwrite a non-blank channel).
  • Move – to a different category or group; channels after it move up. Use it to rearrange the order within a group.
  • Insert – a blank channel above the selected one. Inserting at channel 99 deletes channel 99 (after confirmation).
  • Clear – empties the channel (it becomes blank; cannot be undone).
  • Delete (next CH moves up) – removes the channel.

Copy Memory to VFO: in Memory mode hold [MW], choose Copy to VFO, YES.

Names

Channels and groups take 16-character names: Edit, NAME, enter and ENT, then <<Overwrite>>. For a category or group name, select it, push [QUICK] and choose Edit Category Name or Edit Group Name. To show the name above or below the frequency, use SET, Display, Display Type (Freq or Name).

Categories

  1. MENU, MEMORY, Memory CH, <<Add Category>>.
  2. Edit Name, enter a name.
  3. Icon Select and choose an icon.
  4. Group Select, tick the groups that have no category, push [QUICK], choose Fix, then <<Save>>.

To rename or change the icon of a category: select it, push [QUICK], Edit Category Name or Select Icon. Delete Category or Release Category (frees the groups) are also under QUICK; Add Group adds another.

Category icons: Airplane, Passenger Plane, Balloon, Fighter Aircraft, Transport Aircraft, Control Tower, Takeoff, Landing, Radar Control, Helicopter, Truck, Worker, FSC, ATIS, Train, Electric Locomotive, Leisure Boat, Ship, License Free Radio, Restaurant, Shopping Center, Fire Engine, Fire Station, Ambulance, Medical, Hospital, Bus, Building, Yagi Antenna, Television, Security Guard, Leisure, Jeep, Base, Factory, Car, Telephone, Wireless Microphone, Base Transceiver and Portable Transceiver.

Favorites

In Memory mode push [QUICK], Add to Favorites, ON (a favourite icon shows). Favorite Mode (QUICK) then lets [DIAL] select only favourites (per band), and Exit Favorite Mode leaves it.
