IC-R15 Menu System, Quick Menu & Entering Text

Summary: How to use the IC-R15’s MENU screen, the Quick Menu window and the character entry screen.

The MENU Screen

Push [MENU] to open the MENU screen, a tree of settings for things you don’t change often. The top level has SIMPLE MODE, RECORD, FM RADIO, MEMORY and SET. Use the D-pad and [DIAL] to move, [ENT] to set an option, and [V/MHz]/[CLEAR] to go up a level. Push [MENU] again to exit.

The manuals describe this as “Select”: for example “[MENU] > SET > Function > Auto Power OFF” means push MENU, choose SET, then Function, then Auto Power OFF, then the option.

To return a setting to its default: open the option, push [QUICK] and choose Default.

The Quick Menu

Push [QUICK] to open the Quick Menu, a short list of the things you change often. Its contents depend on the mode:

• VFO mode: Select Band, MODE, DUP, TONE and VSC (FM/FM-N only), TS (tuning step), ATT, AF Filter, Weather Alert (USA only), Battery Status, Start REC, FM Radio Mode (A band only), B Band / A Band, and Dualwatch ON/OFF.
• Memory mode: Favorite Mode, Select Category/Group, Memory Selection Range, MODE, DUP, TONE, VSC, TS, ATT, AF Filter, SKIP and Add to Favorites among others.
• FM Radio mode: ATT, Select Group, SKIP, SKIP Select Mode, Weather Alert, Battery Status, Exit FM Radio Mode.

Entering Text

Names, category names, group names and file names use the character entry screen.

1. Where a name can be edited, push [QUICK] and choose the character type: [ABC] (A-Z, 0-9, space), [abc] (a-z, 0-9, space), [123] (digits) or [!”#] (symbols).
2. Rotate [DIAL] to choose a character and push [ENT].
3. D-pad moves the cursor; rotating [DIAL] inserts a character at the cursor; [CLEAR] deletes one (hold to delete continuously); in ABC/abc, [QUICK] switches upper and lower case.
4. Push [ENT] when finished.

Maximum lengths: memory names, category names, group names, scan edge names, Program Link names and FM Radio memory names are 16 characters. File names for Save Setting and Export are 20 characters and can’t contain / : ; * < >.

Example: to name a channel, MENU, MEMORY, Memory CH, choose the category, group and channel, push QUICK, choose Edit, choose NAME, enter the name, push ENT, choose <<Overwrite>> and YES.
