TRX-2E Programming Trunked Systems, DMR & NXDN

Summary: How to create trunked systems (TSYS) and talkgroups (TGRP) on the TRX-2E, including DMR and NXDN systems in EZ Scan.

The Rule to Remember

Each talkgroup object belongs to a trunked system object. The first time you make a talkgroup on a system you must also create the system (TSYS) with its parameters; after that the TSYS can be used again and again. Each system type and its essential parameters are described in the help section of the EZ Scan software.

Adding a New Trunked System on the Scanner

  1. Program Menu, Add System, then choose the type: Motorola, EDACS, LTR, P25, DMR or NXDN. Press SEL.
  2. Scroll to Edit Sites and press SEL, then choose 0001: New site to open the Edit Site menu.
  3. Edit the frequencies and alpha tag. For Motorola and P25 enter the control-channel frequencies; for other types enter all the system frequencies. Select the 01: position, key in a frequency, press SEL, and continue until done. Press MENU and SEL to save.
  4. If the system is narrow-band FM select NFM. Normally nothing else is needed.
  5. Save Changes, then from the Edit Sites menu you can Add New, Delete Current or go Back to system, where you can Cancel Changes, Save Changes, Edit Sites, Add Talkgroup and set the Alpha Tag.
  6. Choose Save Changes to return to the Program Menu; MENU returns to the Main Menu.

Adding the First Talkgroup

  1. Program Menu, Edit System, choose the system, then scroll to Add Talkgroup.
  2. Enter a TGID, or store the Wildcard talkgroup 65535, which lets you hear everything on the system.
  3. Give it a Tag using the text entry method, press SEL, then Save Changes. The guide’s example names a talkgroup “TG840” (a UK amateur DMR talkgroup).

A TGRP object can be set up four ways:

  • Wildcard talkgroup – all talkgroup call traffic on the system.
  • Talkgroup with TGID – only that talkgroup ID.
  • Wildcard private call – all private-call traffic; set the Type to Private.
  • Private call with ID – only private calls for a specific radio ID, entered in the TGID field with the Type set to Private.

Tick the Radio ID box to receive private/individual calls on systems that support them.

DMR and NXDN in EZ Scan

To create a new DMR or NXDN system in the EZ Scan PC application:

  1. Click the Trunked Radio Systems tab and click New. A new row appears.
  2. Set the Alpha Tag, choose the Type (DMR or NXDN) and the Country, and set AGC to On.
  3. With the new row highlighted, use the Site Details tab, click the “Site 001” alpha tag and enter the site frequencies on the Site Frequencies tab. For best performance enter all the site’s frequencies (control, alternate and others), with no duplicates.
  4. Open Talkgroup Details. If there’s no wildcard for the system, click Add Wildcard and choose the scanlist. On Radio ID Details click Add Wildcard for a Radio ID wildcard.
  5. Write your configuration to the SD card using the Scanner/SD Card menu.

For DMR/NXDN the scanner doesn’t use a control channel; the TRX-1 guide says it scans all sites and frequencies for each site, so only enter and enable sites you expect to be in range.

Notes

  • New objects go to the default scanlist until you group them (see TRX-2E Objects, Scanlists & Scan Sets).
  • The scanner masks encrypted digital traffic; see EncMode in TRX-2E V-Scanner Storage & Global Settings.
