TRX-2E Programming Conventional Channels & Editing Objects

Summary: How to add and edit conventional (non-trunked) channels on the TRX-2E, including typing names on the keypad and every object option.

Standard Text Entry

Text is entered with two key presses per character. Keys 2-9 each have three or four letters printed above them. Press the number key for the group, then the number (1, 2, 3 or 4) for the letter’s position in that group. (You can instead use the rotary encoder to scroll the character list and press to select.)

  • A = 2 then 1, B = 2 then 2, C = 2 then 3. AIR is 2 1, 4 3, 7 3.
  • Numbers: press 1, then the number.
  • Punctuation: press 0 first to see the first set, then the key for the mark’s position.
  • Space: the . (period) key.
  • Fn is the shift key: letters are upper case by default and Fn switches to lower case; for punctuation Fn selects the second set. The shift stays until Fn is pressed again.
  • Use the arrow keys to move the cursor; Fn + left/right jumps to the start or end of the field. In tag fields the period key clears a character and SKIP clears the field.

Adding a Conventional Frequency

  1. Press MENU, choose Program Menu, then Add Conv Freq.
  2. Write over the existing frequency (or press SKIP to clear it) using the keypad or arrows, then press SEL.
  3. To rename it, scroll to Tag (the default is “Channel”), press SEL and enter the name, then SEL to store it.
  4. Scroll to Save Changes and press SEL. Press MENU to return to the Main Menu.

The Program Menu offers Global Settings, Edit System, Add System and Add Conv Freq. Set the RX Mode to suit the frequency: airband (108-137 MHz) is AM; most other UK voice services are FM or NFM.

Editing Objects

From the Main Menu choose Browse Objects, browse to an object and press MENU. Not every option appears on every object.

  • Cancel Changes / Save Changes
  • Edit System – system parameters
  • Frequency and Alpha Tag (the object’s name)
  • Set Scanlists – which scanlists the object belongs to
  • DG Mode – analogue, digital or auto
  • RX Mode – FM, NFM (narrow FM), Auto or AM
  • SQ Mode – turns squelch search on or off. Store SQ Code appears when you press MENU on a conventional channel set to CTCSS or DCS search; it stores the code found so later transmissions must match it
  • SQ Exclude – exclude certain CTCSS/DCS codes
  • Locked Out (shown by an L) and Skipped – not scanned
  • Priority – checked regularly for activity (shown by a capital P)
  • Delay – waits two seconds for a reply after a transmission ends before scanning on
  • Attenuate – attenuation for this object
  • AGC – reduces interference from strong local transmitters (conventional frequencies only)
  • Audio Boost – raises the level when the object becomes active
  • Alarm – a sound when activity is found
  • Light – Leave (default backlight), On, or Flash; with Flash Pattern and On Time / Off Time (10 ms steps)
  • LED Enable, LED Flash, Colour Count (1 to 4 colours when the object is active; 0 = off) – see TRX-2E Alert LED Settings
  • Record – record when the object is active
  • Delete Object – removes it from the scanner’s working memory

Saving Found CTCSS, DCS or NAC Codes

When a code is found during a search press MENU, then Store SQ code, then SEL; from then on the scanner only stops on transmissions carrying that code. Simple Display must be unchecked to show and save found codes.
