TRX-1 Legal, Safety, Warranty & Support

Summary: The important legal, safety, compliance and warranty information from the Whistler TRX-1 guide, in plain English.

The guide is written for the United States and Canada. Legal references below are to US rules; check the law where you live. In the UK, for example, the rules on what you may listen to and use differ.

Scanning Legally (US)

It is legal to listen to almost every transmission the scanner can receive under US rules, but never intentionally listen to:

  • Telephone conversations (cellular, cordless or other private means of telephone signal transmission)
  • Paging transmissions
  • Intentionally decoded scrambled or encrypted transmissions

Under the Electronic Communications Privacy Act you can be fined or imprisoned for intentionally listening to, using or divulging the contents of such transmissions without the consent of a party (unless the activity is otherwise legal). The scanner is designed to prevent reception of them. Don’t open the case to modify it to receive them.

In some areas mobile use of a scanner is unlawful or requires a permit, and it is illegal in many areas to interfere with public safety officials by going to an incident scene without authorisation. Even where not permitted, mobile use is typically permitted for a licensed amateur radio operator.

FCC and Industry Canada Statement

The scanner complies with the limits for a scanning receiver under FCC Part 15 and with Industry Canada licence-exempt RSS standards (FCC ID HSXSC10, IC 1698A-SC10). If it causes interference to radio or TV, try re-orienting or relocating the antenna, increasing the separation, or using a different outlet. Shielded cables must be used for Class B compliance. Changes not approved by the manufacturer could void the user’s authority to operate.

Handling

Keep the scanner dry (wipe it dry if wet), use and store it in normal temperatures, handle it carefully, keep it away from dust and dirt, and wipe it with a damp cloth. Tampering with the internals can cause malfunction, may invalidate the warranty and could void your FCC authorisation.

Library Copyright

The library data is provided by arrangement with RadioReference.com (copyright 2016, RadioReference.com LLC). It is for your personal use with the TRX-1 and its PC software: it may not be copied or transferred to anyone else, or posted on a website, and decompiling it or converting it for use with another scanner is expressly prohibited. The data comes from volunteers and may contain errors, or be out of date after system changes; RadioReference isn’t responsible for errors or omissions.

Warranty (US)

The product is warranted to the original purchaser for one year from purchase against defects in materials and workmanship, when bought from an authorised Whistler retailer. It is void if the unit is abused, misused, modified or improperly installed, or if the housing or serial numbers are removed. Don’t return it to the store. Warranty service needs dated proof of purchase and the unit’s serial number. Whistler is not liable for consequential damage. Out-of-warranty service is charged at a minimum fee (US$120 in the guide). Outside the US, ask the retailer or supplier where you bought it.
