TRX-1 Programming Trunked Systems & Talkgroups

Summary: How to create a trunked system (TSYS) and its talkgroups (TGRP) by hand on the TRX-1.

Note: trunked systems programmed this way are for systems you know the parameters of. In the US and Canada most are simply imported from the library (see TRX-1 Programming From the Library: Set Location & Browse Library).

The Rule to Remember

Each talkgroup object belongs to a trunked system object. The first time you make a talkgroup on a system you must also create the system (TSYS) with its parameters. After that the TSYS can be used over and over. A detailed description of each supported system type and its essential parameters is in the help section of the EZ Scan software.

Adding a New Trunked System

  1. Program Menu, Add System, then choose the system type: Motorola, EDACS, LTR, P25, DMR or NXDN. Press SEL.
  2. Scroll to Edit Sites and press SEL, then choose 0001: New site to open the Edit Site menu.
  3. Edit the frequencies and alpha tag. For Motorola and P25 systems enter the control-channel frequencies; for other types enter all the system frequencies. Select the 01: position, key in a frequency, press SEL, and continue until done. Press MENU and SEL to save.
  4. If the system is narrow-band FM select NFM. Normally nothing else is needed.
  5. Return with Save Changes. From the Edit Sites menu you can Add New, Delete Current or go Back to system, where you can Cancel Changes, Save Changes, Edit Sites, Add Talkgroup, and set the Alpha Tag.
  6. Scroll to Save Changes and press SEL to return to the Program Menu; MENU returns to the Main Menu.

Adding the First Talkgroup

  1. Program Menu, Edit System, choose the system, then scroll to Add Talkgroup.
  2. Enter a TGID, or store the Wildcard talkgroup 65535, which lets you hear everything on the system.
  3. Give it a Tag (for example POLICE DISPATCH) using the text entry method, press SEL, then Save Changes.

A TGRP object can be set up four ways:

  • Wildcard talkgroup – all talkgroup call traffic on the system.
  • Talkgroup with TGID – only that talkgroup ID.
  • Wildcard private call – all private-call traffic; set the Type to Private.
  • Private call with ID – only private calls for a specific radio ID, entered in the ID field with the Type set to Private.

Tick the Radio ID box to receive private/individual calls on systems that support them.

Notes

  • Objects go to the default scanlist until you group them (see TRX-1 Objects, Scanlists & the Library).
  • The scanner detects encrypted digital traffic and masks it; see the EncMode and EncLevel settings in TRX-1 V-Scanner Storage & Global Settings.
