BCD160DN Reading the Display & Icons

Summary: A guide to the icons and information on the BCD160DN’s screen.

The Display

The scanner shows different screens for Scan, Service Search and Quick Search, and not every element appears on every screen. The top line shows the bank or search name, the next line the channel name or frequency, with icons around them and a row of bank numbers at the bottom.

Icons and Their Meanings

  • Priority channel icon – the current channel is a priority channel.
  • Tone/code data – C67.0 (CTCSS), DCS023 (DCS), CC1 (DMR Color Code) and so on.
  • BNK – the bank number, 1-9 and 0. The number of the bank being scanned flashes.
  • Modulation – AM, NFM, FM, WFM or FMB.
  • Digital mode icons (shown in the same place in conventional and search modes):
  • CAP – Capacity Plus / Linked Capacity Plus voice and data (MOTOTRBO)
  • CON – Connect Plus voice and data (MOTOTRBO)
  • DT3 – trunked DMR (ETSI Tier 3) voice and data
  • DMR – one-frequency DMR site, or simplex DMR voice
  • IDS – IDAS in NXDN
  • ND4 / ND9 – NXDN 4800 or 9600 direct frequency
  • NX4 / NX9 – NXDN 4800 or 9600 NEXEDGE
  • NXD – unknown NXDN system
  • XPT – Hytera XPT voice and data (MOTOTRBO)
  • P25 / DAT – APCO Project 25. The scanner skips P25 signals when scanning or searching.
  • ATT – the attenuator is on; G-ATT – global attenuator on.
  • IFX – the current frequency uses IF Exchange.
  • WX – Weather Alert Priority is on.
  • PRI – Priority Scan is on; it blinks while Priority Plus scan is active. A reversed icon means Priority Do-Not-Disturb (DND).
  • V-3 to V+3 – a volume offset is on.
  • Battery icon – blinks if battery voltage is low, or if a bad battery is installed and then power is connected.
  • Key lock – the keypad lock is on.
  • Signal strength bar – 0-5.
  • L/O – the channel or frequency is permanently locked out; TL/O – temporarily locked out.
  • HOLD – holding on a channel or frequency.
  • F – Function mode is active (times out after 3 seconds; press and hold FUNC for Function Hold, when the icon blinks).

Service and Search Screens

During a service search the top line shows the service name, and the bottom line shows the frequency with a direction arrow. The bottom row shows SVC banks; during custom searches it shows SRC banks. Bank numbers that are disabled or empty aren’t shown, and the bank being searched flashes.

Digital Error Rate

To see the digital decoder error rate: press the scroll control (for volume) or FUNC then the scroll control (for squelch), then press the control again. A smaller ERR: number means fewer errors. This screen never times out; press the control to leave it.
