BCD436HP/536HP Setting Your Location, Range & Service Types

Summary: How to tell the scanner where you are, choose how far it looks, and switch service types on and off.

Set Your Location and Range

Press Menu, scroll to Set Your Location and Range and press E/yes. Options: Enter Zip/Postal Code, Auto Locate, Set Manual Location, Set Up GPS, Set Range, Edit Location and Save Location.

  • Enter Zip/Postal Code – sets the centre of a zip or postal code (not your exact spot) with a default scan range of 20 miles. Choose the country (USA or Canada), then enter the code. You can also press the Zip key. Then set the range, name and save the location.
  • Auto Locate – tries to monitor any Motorola or P25 system in your area that’s also in the RadioReference database, and sets the location from the tower it finds (not your exact position), with a default range of 30 miles. Press E/yes or ./no to accept; Menu cancels.
  • Set Manual Location – your exact position, default range 0 miles. Enter latitude (./no toggles N/S) and longitude (./no toggles E/W).
  • Set Up GPS – location format (DMS or DEG) and serial port baud rate (Off, 4800 default for GPS, 9600, 19200, 38400, 57600 or 115200).
  • Set Range – 0-50 miles, overriding the default range. On the BCD536HP you can also press Rang.
  • Edit Location – create or edit a saved location: Edit Name, Use Location (make it current), Delete Location (only saved ones; the last location is retained for the database), Set Location Information, Set Range.
  • Save Location – saves the current location and range and makes it current.

To change location later: BCD536HP press Zip; BCD436HP press Zip/Services. Then choose the country and enter the code.

Understanding Range

  1. Range only affects Favorites Lists with Location Control on and departments/sites that have locations programmed. Everything in the full database has locations. Manually programmed departments and sites without locations aren’t affected.
  2. You receive departments and sites whose range plus your scan range covers the distance. For example, a scan range of 10 miles and a department range of 30 miles: a department less than 40 miles away is enabled.
  3. If you use Add Current dB Channels from a list with a 10-mile range and then raise the range to 20 miles, Location Control doesn’t add the extra channels from the additional 10 miles.

Selecting Service Types

Not all service types are on by default. The defaults are EMS Dispatch, Fire Dispatch, Law Dispatch, Custom 1 and Multi-Dispatch.

  1. BCD536HP: press Serv. BCD436HP: press Func then Zip/Services.
  2. Scroll to each type and press E/yes to enable or disable.
  3. Press System to exit.

If a service type isn’t in any list, the scanner shows “—“. Descriptions of the types are in BCD436HP/536HP Troubleshooting & Reference Tables. If you hear nothing, check service types first.
